  • Adopting Skyler

    Wednesday, Nov 19, 2008 @09:38am CST

Courtney Leblanc was a blushing bride on her wedding day just a few months ago; but it wasn't just her new husband making her smile, it's the joy beaming from this tiny four-year-old with a huge heart.

"Whatever is going on, she wants to do it. She wants to run it. She wants to be in charge. She's just a sweetheart," Courtney said.

Unlike some adoption stories, Courntey has known Skyler since she was a baby. Giving her more insight to her background.

She continues, "she's been through so much at a young age. I hope she doesn't remember that as she gets older."

Courntey says after reports of family problems, Skyler was placed in foster care. Courtney risked becoming estranged from her until she's 18. Although the decision wasn't easy to adopt, Courntey knew she could never forgive herself if she let the opportunity pass her by.

"As time went on, you can't help but love her and do for her," she said.

She says Skyler is a great fit for her family which already includes a 15 and an eight-year-old.

"They pitch in and help with her homework. She's the queen in here. They get what she needs."

While she admits the adoption process was no cake walk Courntey says she'd do it all over again. And she may have to, Skyler's biological mother is expecting another baby next month. And Courtney says she doesn't want them growing up apart, leaving another child to hunt for a "forever family."

Adoption day in Jefferson County is Friday, November 21st. According to the Department of Family and Protective Services, 11 families are expecting new additions.
