Reported by: Scott Price Thursday, Apr 9, 2009 @10:07am CDT An Orangefield teacher has been indicted for having a sexual relationship with a student.
The Orange County Grand Jury has returned six indictments against Jennifer Lea Burton. Three indictments charge her with sexual assault, while three others charge her with improper relationship between educator and student. The indictments cover a period from September 2008 through November 2008. Burton was a teacher/coach at Orangefield Junior High School and the victim was a student of that school. Both Sexual Assault and Improper Relationship Between an Educator and Student are 2nd Degree felony offenses with a range of punishment from two years probation to twenty years in prison and a fine of $10,000.00 for each count. Bond has been set at $15,000 for each of the Sexual Assault indictments and $10,000 for each of the Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student indictments. No trial schedule has been established. The district says Burton was placed on leave last week. "The entire school community is shocked and saddened to learn that a professional teacher might be involved in any crime against a child, said Superintendent Philip Welch. "School district personnel will continue their focus on maintaining a safe school environment for our students." Welch says a report of the incident has been submitted to the State Board for Educator Certification. The school board will also consider taking action on Burton's employment contract at a special meeting next week. |
