There's no secret that shipping, especially valuable oil and natural gas, is one of the biggest industries in southeast Texas.  Could pirates ever pose a danger to the ships that pass through the area?

There are over 1,000 commercial ships that come in and out of the waterways in Jefferson County every year.

Deputy Chief Ron Hobbs with the Jefferson County Narcotics and Marine Divisions says there is always that concern because of the critical infrastructure and heavy industry in the county.  However, he did say if ships in the area ever experienced a piracy attack, the county is well prepared.  Since the 911 attack, they've increased the size of it's marine unit.  Plus, they have trained swat teams on their boats.

Hobbs says Jefferson County has never experienced a piracy attack.

The Port of Beaumont is the 4th busiest commercial port in the United States.  The Port of Port Arthur is the 14th.
