Reported by: Brandon Jones Thursday, Aug 20, 2009 @07:40pm CDT A pile of dirt that sits on the side of Sabine Pass School will soon be home to a 60,000 square foot auditorium and gym.
The school district held a groundbreaking Thursday. "That facility will have two science labs, two math classrooms, and fine arts." Superintendent Malcolm Nash said. Hurricane Ike damaged the school's old facilities. But thanks to voters approving the district's $15 million school bond in May, Fourth graders like Collin Capo won't have to spend recess in the cafeteria. "I just wanna see how they are going to build it up 17-feet off the ground like the school." Capo said. While Collin maybe worried about elevation levels, Darla Booth feels this a big step in the recovery efforts for Sabine Pass. "It provides so much for them as well as an area to meet in. I believe every school needs that." Booth said. The new school year starts Monday for these kids. But they'll have to wait until July 2010 to call the new facility a part of their school. |
