  • 10/24 Southwest Airlines Thinking Green To Save Money

    Saturday, Oct 24, 2009 @08:27am CDT

Southwest Airlines is taking steps to help the environment and save money.

The Dallas-based airline this week rolled out a "green plane" that will test new environmentally responsible materials that will reduce waste and weight.

The eco-friendly products on the plane include recyclable carpet installed in sections and new seat covers that weigh less.

Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly says they expect the green products to not only help the environment, but also create a fuel and materials cost saving for Southwest.

The airline also plans to kick off a more robust onboard recycling program in November.

It's a co-mingled system that will allow the airline to capture more recyclable material and divert it from the waste stream. (Copyright 2009 by VERTEXNews/Newsroom Solutions)
